It's so sad to think that Bailey Coy Books won't be around any more. It's been a fixture on the Hill for 26 years! So, for those of you who need to mourn the loss of this iconic bookshop and celebrate their incredible history, you need to attend the  Wake & Auction on Thursday, December 3. You can help the store raise some cash to cover final expenses by bidding on the awesome stuff they've collected over the years. From the Brown Paper Ticket's page:

Auctioneer Laura Michalek will oversee bidding on a pair of white boxer shorts signed by David Sedaris, original cartoons out of our guestbook by Matt Groening and Lynda Barry, a poster signed by Annie Leibovitz, an original painting from the Big Fucking Hands series by Ellen Forney, signed first editions and other very special and very odd items. We'll also auction off dates with two of Capitol Hill's celebrity politicians, State Senator Ed Murray and City Councilmember Sally Clark.

This is not hill specific, but still good news for the LGBT community. The Obama Administration signed three proposals to prevent LGBT descrimination in housing.

  • The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced that it was clarifying the definition of "family" to explicitly include lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in regulatory and policy changes pertaining to housing and home ownership.
  • HUD also announced it would immediately begin the "first-ever national study of discrimination against members of the LGBT community in the rental and sale of housing."
  • The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced it would create a national resource center to assist LGBT elders.

Northwest Network, the advocacy and support organization for LGBT victims of abuse, needs your help to stop massive funding cuts from the City! Wednesday evening, the Seattle City Council will be hearing testimony on proposed cuts to the Human Services Department in the Mayor's 2010 budget. The proposed Seattle budget includes a 100% funding cut to The Northwest Network's training and technical assistance program for health and human service providers to improve their services to lesbian, bisexual, trans and gay Seattle citizens. More from their email:

Last year, your support in the form of emails, phone calls and attendance at City Council Budget hearings was an integral part of saving this funding for 2009. We are optimistic about getting this funding restored yet again, but we need your help! This year, our trainings have reached over 225 health and human service providers across a range of specializations, from nurses, doctors, social workers,...

Someone decided to spoof the Reject R71 video that surfaced yesterday. For those of you who have not seen the
original Reject R71 video

Dominic Holden has a great article in this week's Stranger about things you can do to get R-71 approved. He breaks it down into three categories: things you can do online, things you can do with volunteers, and things you can do while doing other things. So, get out on the Hill and make sure all your friends and neighbors know how important it is to vote in this election!

For all of you who need to get around town, but want to do it via mass transit, you should definitely check out the new iPhone app One Bus Away. I downloaded it today and used it to get to work. It is AMAZING! Instead of listing a bus stop or route, the app locates you and shows you where the nearest stops are, what routes utilize that stop, and when the next bus is coming. One of my favorite parts about the app was opening it for the first time and seeing all the stops around me here on the hill! From One Bus Away's website:

Features include:

  • Real-time arrival arrival information for public transit.
  • Map display of stops and routes.
  • Nearby stops search for location-aware devices.
  • Bookmarks and recent stop history.
  • Search for stops by route, address, and stop number.

For detailed instructions on how to use the app, see instructions below.

This app was created by a UW graduate student in computer science. If you are impressed, send the a thank you.

As the weather transitions to our gray and cooler fall, stay fit by working out indoors! Seattle's very own Orca Swim Team (a swim team for gays, lesbians, and friends) welcomes new members all the time. They practice at Seattle University's pool.

The Orca Swim Team, established in 1984 by a group of swimmers preparing for Gay Games II, is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the sport of swimming and to educating the public about the value of sports in community-building. We are an active association of gay/lesbian and gay/lesbian-friendly fitness and competitive swimmers with approximately 100 members. Workouts are available 5 times per week throughout the year at Seattle University.

We just learned that the Dunshee House gay/bi mens Friday game nights are on hold for right now. :-( This was a great event for men interested in socializing with other men outside of the bar scene. If you know of other non-bar social activities or would like to start a gay/bi mens game night elsewhere on the Hill, please post in the comments section on this site! This would also be a great time to consider supporting an organization, like Dunshee House, to let them know you appreciate the work that they do!
