One of the films being featured in SIFF's New Italian Cinema Festival looks like an excellent gay-themed movie! Different From Whom? is the debut film from director Umberto Carteni. The film follows an out gay man running for a mayor in a conservative town.

In an unnamed Italian city, the current conservative mayor builds walls to stop crime. Piero (Luca Argentero) is more interested in building community – for gays and lesbians, in particular. When he is paired with a more family-focused woman as his deputy mayor, much conflict ensues. As opposites start attracting, however, Piero’s political ambitions – and his long-term relationship with Remo (Filippo Negro) – are threatened.

Punctuated by bouncy R&B tunes, Different From Whom is a delightful farce about sexuality and politics that playfully satirizes all the spaces along both continuums.

Sitting up at the bar, my dinner partner and I had an enjoyable evening chatting with the chef/owner, Alejandro. We shared several dishes including hongos (warm mushrooms sauteed with garlic and wine served on toasted bread) and the seared scallops. I enjoyed the Ibiza bocadillos, a hot sandwich filled with seared scallops, spicy jalapenos, and plenty of garlic; while my dinner date had a vegetarian arepitas, a small corncake stuffed with mixed seasoned veggies.

What I enjoyed most about Meza is it's versatility. It seems like a great place to enjoy a light dinner, share a few bites and enjoy a drink before heading out to a party, AND the perfect way to end an evening of drinking and dancing, since Meza is open and serving a full menu until...
